Sikaflex®-295 UV

External sealant and adhesive for direct bonding of organic glass in marine environments

Sikaflex®-295 UV is a one-component polyurethane adhesive of paste consistency that cures upon exposure to atmospheric moisture. It is suitable for internal and external sealing applications and for glazing in the marine industry. Sikaflex®-295 UV meets the requirements of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

ADVANTAGES

  • Excellent application properties
  • Resistant to aging and weathering
  • Suitable for glass
  • Approved for OEM market
  • Wheelmark Approved

Jobs

Sikaflex®-295 UV has been specially developed for the marine industry, where it is used for bonding and sealing plastic glazing materials in boats and ships. Due to its excellent weather resistance, this product can also be used for sealing joints in exposed areas. Suitable substrates are aluminium (bright or anodized), GRP (polyester resin), stainless steel, wood, two-component coatings and plastic glazing materials (PC, PMMA). Seek the manufacturer's advice and carry out tests on original substrates before using Sikaflex®-295 UV on materials susceptible to stress cracking. This product is suitable for experienced professional users only. Tests with actual substrates and conditions must be carried out to ensure adhesion and material compatibility.

Technical Information

HARDENING MECHANISM

Sikaflex®-295 UV cures by reaction with atmospheric moisture. At low temperatures the water content in the air is generally lower and the curing reaction proceeds somewhat more slowly (see graph 1).

CHEMICAL RESISTANCE

Sikaflex®-295 UV is generally resistant to fresh water, sea water, diluted acids and diluted caustic solutions; temporarily resistant to fuels, mineral oils, vegetable and animal fats and oils; not resistant to organic acids, glycol alcohol, concentrated mineral acids and caustic solutions or solvents.

Application

Application Information

Surface preparation

Surfaces must be clean, dry and free from all traces of grease, oil, dust and contaminants. Surface treatment depends on the specific nature of the substrates and is essential for a lasting bond. Suggestions for surface preparation can be found in the current edition of the appropriate Sika® pre-treatment chart. Please note that these suggestions are based on experience and must in any case be verified by tests on original substrates.

Application

Sikaflex®-295 UV can be extruded between 10°C and 35°C (climate and product) but changes in reactivity and application properties must be considered. The optimum temperature for substrate and sealant is between 15°C and 25°C.
Please note that viscosity will increase at low temperatures. For ease of application, condition the adhesive at room temperature before use. To ensure uniform thickness of the bond line, it is recommended to apply the adhesive in the form of a triangular bead (see figure 1).

Figure 1: Recommended curb configuration

Sikaflex®-295 UV can be extruded with manual, pneumatic or electric piston guns as well as pump equipment. The open time is significantly shorter in hot and humid climates. Parts must always be installed within the open time. Never join adhesive parts if the adhesive has built up a skin.

Spatula and finishing

Tooling and finishing must be carried out within the skin time of the product. It is recommended to use Sika® Tooling Agent N. Other finishing agents must be tested for suitability and compatibility prior to use.

Removal

Uncured Sikaflex®-295 UV can be removed from tools and equipment with Sika® Remover-208 or another suitable solvent. Once cured, the material can only be removed mechanically. Hands and exposed skin must be washed immediately with Sika® Cleaner-350H cleaning towels or a suitable industrial hand cleaner and water.

Do not use solvents on your skin!

Overpainting

Sikaflex®-295 UV can be painted before and after a skin has formed. If the painting process takes place after the sealant has built up a skin, adhesion may be improved by treating the joint surface with Sika® Aktivator-100 or Sika® Aktivator-205 prior to the painting process. If the paint requires a baking process (> 80 °C), best performance is achieved by allowing the sealant to fully cure first. All paints must be tested by carrying out preliminary trials under production conditions.
The elasticity of paints is generally lower than that of sealants. This may cause the paint to crack in the joint area.
